|54-0103 YF-105B-1-RE Thunderchief
#54-0103 started service on March 5, 1958 , and continued as a test ship at Edwards AFB until written-off by
the USAF on June 1, 1967. Her last duty was with the NAVY Explosive Ordnance Disposal School, Indian
Head, MD where I'm sure she met her demise. #54-0103 was a YF-105B pre-production aircraft and was the
last to have the rear windows.
This is the early Revell kit #H-166:100, 1961 version, that has been out of production for a long time. I always
wanted to build an early test version that had the rear windows. They had such colorful paint schemes. A very
good friend was nice enough to donate a kit he had. Actually, he donated two. The other one I'm doing as
#54-0098, the first F-105 which was designated F-105A.
The kit wasn't too bad for a 1960s kit. The biggest problem I had was with the fit of the canopy, rear windows
and windscreen. They designed it to have the canopy open so the fit closed sucks. Lots of filing and sanding.
Looks better but not perfect. What can you do. It's the only show in town if you want to build one of the real
Finished with Valspar Metallic enamel. You cannot apply it to the model from the spray can. It comes out
way too heavy. It has to be sprayed into a jar so it can be applied with an air brush. Doesn't go on as nice as
the Plasi-Kote though. The ARDC and Edwards badges for the aircraft were drawn with Corel Draw 9 and
printed with my Alps printer. I used clear acrylic rod to mount the model. I epoxied brass tubing into the tail
cone/fuselage for strength and the rod to slide into.
Finally had a chance to do the base. Badge drawn with Corel X5 and printed with the Alps printer. Multiple
coats of Minwax clear gloss, sanded and polished.
